CitationAlso, as you pointed out, we think that digital distribution of packaged software is only the first step in expanding our digital business. We will not simply change our existing packaged software distribution channel. Rather, we might have many other types of business models in addition to packaged software. For example, we might see more games that are similar to free-to-play games, games that cost much less or games that require a monthly subscription fee. Digitalization allows for greater flexibility, whereby having more ways to make payments, both software developers and consumers have more options. And Nintendo 3DS and Wii U have flexible systems to handle such trends, so it is now a question of putting these ideas into action. I can definitely say that Nintendo will make new offers that go well beyond simply replacing packaged software with digital software.

2) Le cloud gaming? Non

CitationOn the other hand, I don't think that our games, particularly the types that have strict requirements in terms of real-time responsiveness, can offer high-quality services using cloud gaming technology because of unavoidable network latency, which I mentioned last time. We will of course continue to see how this technology develops, but in order to decide whether cloud gaming is something that we should be interested in, we will need to closely follow the changes in technology and also the business environment. However, at this point in time, I do not think that acquiring a cloud gaming company will in any way improve our performance, so we are not moving in that direction.

CitationI decided to refer to our plan to place our overseas operations under my direct control here because, in evaluating the notice regarding changes of directors, I thought that you might wonder who will replace the retiring general manager of the International Division and who will supervise our business in the U.S. after Mr. Kimishima, current chairperson and CEO of Nintendo of America Inc., comes back to Japan to replace Mr. Mori as a managing director.

CitationGame hardware in general becomes less expensive to produce as we produce more, and the price of semiconductors goes down at a fairly constant rate each year. Moreover, we are estimating that first-party titles will take up a higher proportion of the total projected software sales than the previous year, as you pointed out. The reason why we made this assumption is that we now have a clearer idea of which first-party titles Nintendo can bring to market.

Also, the exchange rates, which were approximately 80 yen to the U.S. dollar and 100-105 yen to the Euro last fiscal year and are now 90 yen to the U.S. dollar and 120 yen to the Euro in our forecast for this fiscal year, have a major impact on our profitability overseas. Appreciation of the U.S. dollar, however, does not always have a positive impact on our financial results. For example, last fiscal year we bought more in dollars than we sold in dollars and the advantages of the stronger dollar/weaker yen did not quite show last year. But we predict that our North American operations will make a big improvement this year, so we are expecting to enjoy the advantages of a weaker yen.

Citationely. As I explained in the presentation before, when people view Nintendo Direct on the Nintendo eShop, it is a very effective advertisement, but it has only minimal media costs. What I mean by "minimal" is that whenever one wants to transmit information on the Internet, one needs to pay a CDN (content delivery network), where one is charged according to the flow volume of data, so it can never be cost-free. However, this is much more inexpensive than media such as television or print media for which we need to pay advertising costs. What's more, people who are interested in our games watch our videos for as long as 15 or 30 minutes. We can divide advertising media into two types, namely, activities more geared towards gaining awareness, including TV commercials where we need to explain one message in 15 or 30 seconds, and those which can be used to attract potential consumers and have them understand a product to the point where they make the decision to purchase it. We will continue to utilize TV commercials to raise awareness of our products, but we are now in a position to use different methods for product understanding and buying motivation.

CitationThe reason for the delayed release of our first-party titles was the fact that completing the games released at the same time as the launch of Wii U required more development resources than expected, so some staff members from development teams working on other titles had to help complete them. In short, the development teams of "Pikmin 3" and other future games were understaffed during that period. We do not simply have one easily identifiable bottleneck in software development. These days it is becoming increasingly challenging to determine the minimum development resources required for customer satisfaction.

7) Si les gros éditeurs boudent, Nintendo ira chercher des développeurs issus d'autres horizons (web, mobile, etc)

CitationWe made two announcements at GDC held in San Francisco in late March. One is "Nintendo Web Framework," which is the development environment used for "Wii Street U powered by Google" I mentioned earlier and some VOD services available for Wii U. The number of developers who can use versatile web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript is probably more than 100 times larger than that of the current software developers for dedicated gaming machines. We would like them to create software for our console. "Wii Street U powered by Google" was actually developed by a very compact team whose core members had never developed games for dedicated gaming machines. As I have already mentioned, the application has been and will be updated constantly by a small development team, which means that the development environment has enabled us to significantly reduce development challenges. Since our announcement at GDC, we have received inquiries about it from hundreds of new development companies and individuals. We believe there will be something novel and fascinating from their development work, thereby expanding the range of the software available for Wii U.

The other thing we announced was that developers can now use Unity, a cross-platform video game engine, for Wii U development, and we have started offering it to the developers. There are over a million Unity developers, including many in developing countries where the business of dedicated gaming machines is not prosperous. We would like to create opportunities for these developers to have their games available for Wii U. We hope that these actions to expand the range of software developers, in addition to the functions of Nintendo eShop and payments through e-money I mentioned before, will give us new business possibilities.
